Topic: Sarcophagi and Stone

Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum

In Ancient Greece, bodies were entombed in limestone caskets that were thought to decompose the corpses within.  So the word sarkophagos - which meant “eating flesh" - was the common name for these above-ground tombs.  At Spring Grove, you'll see that some of our sarcophagi resemble large stone coffins - others resemble a claw foot bathtub; join this walking tour as we feature 13 of our "non-flesh-eating" monuments.
